Carving notes

Their recent body of work is comprised of relief carvings meticulously rendered using an electric router. These depict objects or situations of vicarious interaction. These objects augment each other to produce a relation that is accessed through specific qualities. A multiplicity of interpretation through the interaction of irreconcilably estranged components. The quiet work concepts of authenticity of expression that can be found through a reduced capacity of manipulation. These were informed by a series of hand embossments done while studying in Amsterdam. The rendering of them using an electric router plays against the skilled hand of the craftsman and replaces it with the perfect bevel and clumsy manipulation. This process visually recalls the manipulation of digital paint in image editing programs and mobile applications. The reduction of figure ground relation to such a simple relief carving creates a flattening, for an inverted trompe l’oeil effect. Where the marks are in stark contrast with their surface, softened by the shadows created by atmospheric light.
